Daytime Holiday tours of the Hotchkiss-Fyler House

Daytime Holiday tours of the Hotchkiss-Fyler House continue! Come and enjoy the historic house aglow with Christmas lights and decorated with vintage ornaments and antique toys. Staff will guide you on a half-hour walkthrough of the first floor. Daytime tours are offered on select dates to groups of 10 at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Annual John Brown Commemorative Hike sponsored by the Torrington Historical Society this Sunday December 4th at 4pm at the John Brown Birthplace. Join us as we commemorate the life of John Brown and his commitment to equality and civil rights. We will walk the 2/3 mile loop trail and take a short side trip to walk the new boardwalk that will connect to the Five Points Arts Center next year. Dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes or boots as the trial can be wet in places. The ceremony begins at 4pm with a few comments about John Brown and the walk will end around 5pm. Bring a flashlight or lantern because this walk takes place at dusk. Free and open to the public. Park along John Brown Road

Holiday tours of the Hotchkiss-Fyler House are back this December!!! The Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum, built in 1900, features original family furnishings, impressive woodwork, painted and stenciled walls and collections of fine and decorative arts. During the holiday season the house takes on a special ambiance when it is decorated with Christmas trees, vintage ornaments, antique toys, wreaths, greenery, and white lights. On Wednesday November 23rd, Leslie Mayes of NBC CT visited the John Brown Birthplace (owned by the Torrington Historical Society) to shoot a story about the John Brown Birthplace and the John Brown Project, a video produced by Torrington's Culture for a Cause. The story will air on NBC CT in early December. We will post more information as it becomes available. This Friday!! An outdoor concert in the gardens of the Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum featuring the Kris Jensen Jazz All-Stars. An evening of #swing #jazzstandards #blues and #soul with Kris Jensen on saxophone and featuring vocalist, Linda Ransom. Also appearing Doug Schlink on piano, Stephen Porter on bass and Jocelyn Pleasant on drums. Jazz in the Garden! Final Concert - Aug 26th The Torrington Historical Society’s popular Jazz in the Garden series will conclude the 2022 season on Friday, August 26th at 6:30 pm. with a performance by renowned Torrington saxophonist Kris Jensen and his ‘Jazz All Stars’, featuring Linda Ransom, vocalist. The concert will take place on the grounds of the Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum at the Torrington Historical Society, 192 Main Street. Sponsored by Northwest Community Bank and Union Savings Bank. Jazz in the Garden this Saturday Night with the Adam Nussbaum Quartet! Our Summer Concert Series continues on Saturday, August 6th at 6:30 p.m. in the gardens of the historic Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum. The quartet features Nussbaum on drums along with noted musicians Dave Santoro on bass, Jerry Bergonzi on saxophone and Larry Ham on piano. Nussbaum is considered one of the finest drummers working today. In the event of rain, the concert will be held at Five Points Arts Center, 855 University Drive in Torrington. The final performance of the summer series, the Kris Jensen Quartet with vocalist Linda Ransom, will be held on August 26th. Tickets for both events are $15 for Torrington Historical Society members; $18 for non-members and can be purchased by going to our website #linkinbio Please bring your own lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments. As a historical society, part of our mission is to collect photographs, not just to showcase Torrington of the past but also to inspire the preservation of historic buildings. Many buildings are unfortunately lost, such as the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Co freight office formerly located on Pearl Street, visible in this 1969 photo recently donated to the historical society by Stacey duBell Mileti. The freight house was erected sometime after 1909 and was demolished around 1970. The second photo in this post shows the site today, now owned by Alliance Carpet Cushion Co.
