DESCRIPTION:Torrington Historical Society is pleased to offer a Zoom program on the history of the grounds and gardens of the Hotchkiss-Fyler House on May 10th at 6:30 p.m. The house\, which was completed in 1900\, was the home of the Hotchkiss and Fyler families until the last occupant\, Gertrude Fyler Hotchkiss\, bequeathed the property to the Historical Society. In addition to his work as a bass player\, Chevan believes in jazz education in all its shapes\, sizes\, methods\, processes\, and encounters. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. \nThe SCSU Latin Jazz Ensemble explores the repertoire of jazz and improvised music from the Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures of the Caribbean and South America. Expect a concert with classic pieces from Cuba\, Brazil\, Puerto Rico and other parts of the region. DESCRIPTION:The transcontinental railroad was considered the greatest engineering\, financial feat in the world at the time of its completion. Yet thousands of bodies marked its route\, hundreds went bankrupt on the railroads\, and many decried their power and influence. This talk will discuss the history of the railroad from its beginnings in the 1820’s in the US to May 10\, 1869 when the railroad was completed. The talk will also explore the vast power and influence that railroads exerted over the United States\, altering the country’s customs and making us a nation of travelers. DESCRIPTION:Center Cemetery is the only remaining burial ground in Downtown Torrington. Tour guides will lead groups through the cemetery by lantern with stops at seven graves where actors will share the stories of early Torrington residents. Tours will start at the Torrington Historical Society (meet at the shed on the property near the cemetery gate) and end at the Main cemetery entrance behind City Hall. Please arrive 5 minutes ahead of time and bring a flashlight. Parking available behind the Historical Society or on the street. Tours are at 6:00\, 6:20\, 6:40\, 7:00\, 7:20\, 7:40 pm.
