DESCRIPTION:Hiking Ruins Seldom Seen in Southern New England with Dr. Nick Bellantoni \n\n\nFormer State Archaeologist Nick Bellantoni will join us to discuss his new book\, entitled Hiking Ruins in Southern New England\, a guide to 40 little known archaeological sites in Connecticut\, Massachusetts\, and Rhode Island. Many people have no idea that there are archaeological sites in the area with a cultural tale to tell\, situated on public lands where they are allowed to hike. Nick will highlight some of the archaeological gems referenced in the book and share the history and purpose of the sites and the people who lived on the land around them. \n\n\nNICHOLAS F. BELLANTONI \n\nDr. Nicholas F. Bellantoni serves as the emeritus state archaeologist with the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History and is adjunct associate research professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut. He received his doctorate in anthropology from UConn in 1987 and was shortly thereafter appointed state archaeologist. His duties were many\, but primarily include the preservation of archaeological sites in the state. He is a former State Commissioner for the Commission on Culture and Tourism and sat on the State Historic Preservation Council for over twelve years. He is a former President of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and the National Association of State Archeologists. He has been excavating in Connecticut for almost 40 years. \n\nThe book\, Hiking Ruins in Southern New England\, by Nicholas Bellantoni\, PhD and Archaeologist  Barbara Ann Kipfer PhD\, will be available for sale at the program.
