SUMMARY:Animal Mascots of the Civil War with Professor Hamish Lutris
DESCRIPTION:The Civil War was fought by citizen armies that often had their own\, very un-military\, ways of fighting. One thing they did was to bring or adopt animals of many kinds. This talk will focus on those much-loved unit mascots. The idea of using animals to represent military units throughout history will be discussed\, as well as the particular animals honored in Civil War lore and memorialization. The audience should learn something of the more personal side of a war that is often examined only in terms of casualties and logistics. \nHamas Lutris is an Associate Professor of History\, Political Science and Geography at Capital Community College in Hartford. He is a well known speaker and instructor throughout Connecticut and the region with long experience in Central Europe\, having been involved in education\, strategic planning and international agricultural research cooperation programs there. He has also worked in some of America’s premier natural and historical sites and has led naturalist and educational programs in both the U.S. and Europe. His program interests cover a number of areas including Native American history\, the U.S. Civil War\, World Wars I and II\, the American West\, as well as Scientific\, Social and Cultural history. \nThis event is sponsored by the Torrington Savings Bank. DESCRIPTION:In the Watches of the Night: Life in the Nocturnal City\, 1820-1930. \nPresenter – Professor Peter C. Baldwin\, Department of History\, University of Connecticut \nBefore skyscrapers and streetlights glowed at all hours\, American cities fell into inky blackness with each setting of the sun. But over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth century\, new technologies began to light up streets\, sidewalks\, buildings and public spaces. Baldwin will discuss the changing experience of the urban night over this period\, exploring work\, crime\, transportation and leisure\, moving through the gaslight era with the spread of modern police forces and the emergence of late-night entertainment to the era of electricity\, when social campaigns sought to remove women and children from public areas at night. Professor Baldwin’s presentation\, based on research for his book of the same name\, is an illuminating review of a vital era in American urban history. \nPeter Baldwin is a Professor of History at the University of Connecticut. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received both an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from Brown University. Prior to joining the University of Connecticut\, Peter worked as newspaper reporter for the Hartford Courant and served as an assistant professor of history at DePaul University in Chicago He came to the University of Connecticut in 2001 where he teaches classes in the History of Urban America\, History of Childhood in America and America Since 1877. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we tour Migeon Avenue\, which has been described over the years as the “grandest street in Torrington”. We’ll explore it’s rich past\, including the many families that called Migeon Avenue home\, from factory workers\, small business owners and wealthy industrialists; the assorted architectural styles and unique features that grace both elaborate mansions and modest worker housing and also hear the stories of those who lived and worked here\, all of which will bring the street to life and illustrate how this impressive avenue evolved with Torrington’s development during the 1800’s and early 1900’s. \nWe’ll meet at the intersection of Pearl and Migeon promptly at 10 am and walk to Pulaski Street and return to our starting point\, covering both sides of the street. Our focus is primarily in the 1800’s to early 1900’s due to time constraints. Please note that the sidewalk is uneven in some places\, so please wear appropriate footwear.

In the early days\, every small Connecticut village had to depend upon itself for almost every necessity. There was no electricity\, steam power had not been invented and water-powered mills were the answer. \nCommunities often started around a sawmill or a gristmill. More factories whose machines were powered by water or other mills making hats\, buttons\, clocks\, cider\, plaster or iron works would follow. Connecticut water powered mills and factories expanded to serve a world market in the mid-1800s. Access to appropriate river sites wasn’t taken lightly and was one of the reasons Mark Twain said\, Whiskey is for drinking; water is for fighting over. \nJoin us for an interesting view into Connecticut’s many of the water-powered mills that helped create the great state of Connecticut. \n  \nSpeaker Bio: John Cilio   \nJohn Cilio is a historical storyteller\, author and researcher who has brought historical stories back to life for over 15 years. DESCRIPTION:Esteemed percussionist and bandleader Nelson Bello and Friends will end the 2024 Jazz in the Garden Series with an evening of Latin Jazz! \nBello began playing Latin percussion at the age of 8 and traveled to Cuba when he was 15 to perform at the Havana International Jazz Festival as part of “Latin Flavor” (known today as “Insight”). He studied at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts\, The Hartford Conservatory and with Jackie McLean at The Artist Collective. He has worked with such notables as Cheo Feliciano\, Ismael Miranda\, Tony Vega\, Charles Flores\, Andy Gonzalez\, Curtis Brothers among others. Along with trombonist Hommy Ramos he co-founded “TROMBEATZ” and released their debut album “A Caribbean Thing”. Beyond his musical ability he is known for his energy on and off the stage and his passion for the arts and education. DESCRIPTION:The Torrington Historical Society’s popular Jazz in the Garden series will present the Kris Jensen’s Jazz All Stars featuring renowned saxophonist Kris Jensen with accomplished vocalist\, Linda Ransom. The concert will take place on the grounds of the Hotchkiss Fyler House at 192 Main Street\, Torrington. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or through Eventbrite using the link below. \nJensen’s Jazz All Stars \nBand leader Kris Jensen resides in Torrington. He was a semi-finalist in the 1996 prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. He studied Jazz and African-American music at the University of Hartford where he would later teach under the auspices of jazz saxophone legend Jackie McLean. Jensen continues to carry on that great tradition as both a performer and educator. Recent performance of particular note have included concerts or appearances with jazz legends such as trombonist Curtis Fuller\, alto saxophonist Phil Woods and pianist Larry Willis. He has appeared on New Jersey Public Television with Maynard Ferguson\, on “Late Night with David Letterman” with Greg Allman & Friends and on stage with the Allman Brothers Band\, the Dave Matthews Band and with Warren Haynes and Govt. Mule. \nVocalist Linda Ransom has a voice and style beyond compare. Originally from New London and currently residing in Hartford\, she has been singing with some of the finest musicians in Connecticut for decades. Linda’s vocal ability compares with many of the well-known jazz greats such as Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughn. Just as easily\, she can pour her soul out on an R&B hit by Gladys Knight. She has performed throughout the U.S. and in London\, Paris and Matsumoto\, Japan. \nThe Jazz All Stars will present an evening of music drawing from the great American songbook in a program ranging from swing standards to blues\, soul and pop classics. His CD Code 2 garnered 4.5 stars by Downbeat Magazine and was named as one of the top CD’s of 2021. In March 2022\, he received a grant to compose and install an ambient music piece at The Five Points Center for the Visual Arts. \nDave Santoro\, (bass)\, is a full professor at Berklee College of Music. He has appeared on over 50 jazz CD’s including 6 as leader or co-leader. He has played\, toured or recorded with Red Rodney Quintet\, Mulgrew Miller\, Joe Magnarelli\, Phil Grenadier\, Tom Harrell\, Bob Berg\, Pepper Adams\, Bruce Barth\, Kenny Baron\, Victor Lewis\, Nick Brignola\, Dizzy Reece\, Junior Cook\, Terrel Stafford and many others. \nMike DiRubbo (saxophone). On his instrument DiRubbo has it all: from Benny Carter’s mastery of melody\, and Johnny Hodges’ ballad mellow tones to Charlie Parker’s light-speed fluency. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning in the beautiful Hotchkiss Fyler Gardens as we explore the grounds and learn about the centuries old practice of creating an Herbarium album. What is an Herbarium you ask? Great question! An herbarium is a collection of preserved plants that records the diversity of plant life in a particular area and is primarily used for study. During the Victorian Era\, creating an herbarium album evolved and became a popular pastime and craft for women\, artists\, poets and travelers. The Torrington Historical Society is fortunate to have two herbarium albums in their collection made by Torrington residents Julia Brooker and Effie Didsbury in the late 1800’s. Participants will have an opportunity to view these books which will become the inspiration for creating their own record of the plants and flowers found on the grounds of the Hotchkiss Fyler House. Participants will spend some time on the grounds collecting materials\, learn how to preserve them and create their own unique herbarium album using pre-prepared materials\nWhether garden lover\, budding botanist\, environmentalist or creative soul this program is for you! Grab a friend\, your family or come solo – all that’s needed is your curiosity and we’ll have the rest. All ages welcome\, but best suited for adults\, teens and students entering 4th grade or above. Anyone younger than 12 needs to be accompanied by an adult. Please dress for the weather\, as we will be out in the gardens rain or shine to collect materials but will only remain outdoors for the duration of the program if weather permits.
