Happy Halloween! In the 1950s, Torrington’s Park

Happy Halloween! In the 1950s, Torrington’s Parks and Recreation department, in cooperation with several other organizations, held annual Halloween parties for residents of all ages at Fuessenich Park and other venues in town. These parties were major events, attracting thousands of attendees of all ages, complete with music, games, costume parades, dances, and several other events, including the Mr. Jack-O-Lantern contest. At a teen Halloween event at the Armory, one can see that it was standing room only, and that everyone appeared to have a great time. Photos from the collection of the Torrington Historical Society

If you’re looking for Halloween plans this weekend, join us for our annual tour of Center Cemetery in downtown Torrington on Friday, October 25th (rain date: October 26th). Visitors will explore the cemetery in lantern light with a guide and will learn about the history of the cemetery, as well as stories from actors portraying its long-deceased residents. Tours will begin at the back of the Torrington Historical Society’s property and end at the main entrance to Center Cemetery, behind City Hall. Attendees are asked to be at the Society at least five minutes prior to their scheduled tour and are encouraged to bring flashlights or lanterns. Six tours will be offered, each limited to 20 people. Tours will begin promptly at the following times: 6:00, 6:20, 6:40, 7:00, 7:20 and 7:40 pm. Admission is $8 for Torrington Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. Proceeds from the tour will benefit educational programming at the Torrington Historical Society. To purchase tickets, visit the homepage of our website (link in bio) our our eventbrite page.

Mark McEachern, executive director of the Torringt

Mark McEachern, executive director of the Torrington Historical Society, recently outlined the Historical Society’s plans for renovations and additions to the Hotchkiss-Fyler Carriage House. The project, known as the History Education Center, will include climate-controlled collection storage, archives storage, and gallery space in a new addition as well as an event space on the second floor of the carriage house. The project will provide protection for the collections, public access to the archives, and new spaces for educational exhibits, programs and community events.

Today is the final day of Hispanic Heritage Month, which lasts from September 15th to October 15th. The Historical Society wishes a happy Hispanic Heritage Month to everyone in Torrington and beyond!

On September 23rd, members of the Torrington Historical Society and the Torrington Trails Network worked to build two new sections of boardwalk on the trail connecting the John Brown Birthplace with the Five Points Arts Center. The trail improvements will make it easier to cross a wet section of the trail near the Five Points Arts Center, and thanks to their work, this section of the boardwalk is finally complete. On Sunday September 22nd, cemetery restoration exp

On Sunday September 22nd, cemetery restoration expert Karl Munson worked with Historical Society members Bob Gailey and Harvey Guildford to restore 4 headstones in the Fyler Family Cemetery in the Newfield section of Torrington. The cemetery was commissioned by Orsamus R. Fyler, who also built the Hotchkiss-Fyler House, the headquarters of the Torrington Historical Society, and contains burials of several Fyler ancestors. The Fyler Cemetery is one of many historic cemeteries in Torrington that provide insights into community history and connections with our past.

Culture 4 a Cause is hosting a cultural event/fundraiser tomorrow, with music, dance, and food! The Torrington Historical Society has a history of collaborating with Culture 4 a Cause to promote arts and culture in Torrington. We are proud to have worked with C4C on the award-winning documentary “John Brown’s Body—His Truth is Marching On.” Don’t miss this exciting community event! Culture 4 a Cause is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering collective community impact through the arts in Northwest Connecticut. Through projects like City Views, the Artist Development Initiative, the John Brown Project, and the Curi Digital Media Center, C4C is leading the way to highlighting the arts in our region. On September 25, please join us for a talk with historian John Cilio about Connecticut's early water-powered mills. These mills fueled Connecticut's industries, economy, and communities during the state's early years, including in Torrington, where several mills have used the power of the Naugatuck river. The importance of mills cannot be understated, and John Cilio will provide a valuable look into their history. The event will take place at 6:30 pm on September 25th at the Carriage House of the Historical Society at 192 Main Street in Torrington.
