The project will allow the historical society to serve the community in these ways:
- Solve a critical need for climate-controlled museum and archival storage that will ensure the long-term preservation of important community history.
- Create an accessible research library where historical documents, maps, and photographs can be studied by the public
- Allow the historical society to better serve Torrington’s diverse community, schools, and tourists with new, accessible spaces for expanded programs, exhibits, and events
- Provide a first-class space at the museum for community events
- Enhance the Torrington Cultural District and the local economy with a new facility that will be a destination for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to explore Torrington’s rich culture and diverse history
- Make Torrington proud of its heritage!
Project Details
New construction (north of carriage house):
- 3,200 square feet of storage for objects in the museum collection (basement)
- 1,300 square feet of storage for archival materials such as: documents, maps, and photographs with attached public access reading room and offices (1st floor)
- 1,400 square feet of new gallery space (2nd floor)
- 1,900 square feet of roof terrace for events (2nd floor)
- Two-story glass connector between the carriage house and the new construction
- Elevator to access all floors of the new addition and the carriage house
- New fully accessible restrooms
