History Education Center

A new community center at the Torrington Historical Society focused on exhibiting, studying, and preserving the community’s multi-cultural history and diversity.

A transformational facility for the Historical Society and the Community; Featuring a multi-purpose, state-of-the-art addition to the Hotchkiss-Fyler Carriage House as well as a complete interior renovation of the historic Carriage House.

The project will allow the historical society to serve the community in these ways:

  • Solve a critical need for climate-controlled museum and archival storage that will ensure the long-term preservation of important community history. 
  • Create an accessible research library where historical documents, maps, and photographs can be studied by the public 
  • Allow the historical society to better serve Torrington’s diverse community, schools, and tourists with new, accessible spaces for expanded programs, exhibits, and events
  • Provide a first-class space at the museum for community events
  • Enhance the Torrington Cultural District and the local economy with a new facility that will be a destination for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to explore Torrington’s rich culture and diverse history
  • Make Torrington proud of its heritage!

Project Details

New construction (north of carriage house):

  • 3,200 square feet of storage for objects in the museum collection (basement)
  • 1,300 square feet of storage for archival materials such as: documents, maps, and photographs with attached public access reading room and offices (1st floor)
  • 1,400 square feet of new gallery space (2nd floor)
  • 1,900 square feet of roof terrace for events (2nd floor)
  • Two-story glass connector between the carriage house and the new construction
  • Elevator to access all floors of the new addition and the carriage house 
  • New fully accessible restrooms
