A Sweet Tradition: Maple Sugaring in Native American Communities, Torrington Historical Society Carriage House, This Wednesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. Native Americans have been involved in the production of maple syrup and maple sugar for thousands of years. This sweet event, presented by a member of the Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, CT (IAIS) will share the stories, history and traditional methods of making this tasty treat which has enriched the lives of people throughout the world. The event is free, but registration is requested through Torrington Historical Society’s Eventbrite page.

The completion of the building of the Sacred Heart

The completion of the building of the Sacred Heart Church on Grove Street on September 1, 1911, was a dream come true to members of the Slovak community who desired such an edifice for their place of worship. The building served in that capacity for over 100 years. This demi-lune stained glass window in our collection once adorned the church’s entrance, as can be seen in the photo here from the 1930’s. The window was donated to the Torrington Historical Society in 2023 by St. John Paul the Great Parish where it serves as tangible evidence of Torrington’s rich ethnic and religious history. Burrville, named after the Burr family members who

Burrville, named after the Burr family members who settled in the area in the 19th century, is located in the northeast section of Torrington. Though just a small village, it wasn’t short on amenities: Burrville was once home to saw, shingle and grist mills, a tannery, hammer and shoe shop, Borden’s condensed milk operation, taverns and brickyards, manufacturers of soap, castors, batting, roller skates, piano tops, buckles and furniture! Accessible via the Naugatuck Railroad, the village also had a post office, schoolhouse, a church and village hall and was later a stop for the trolley. The John Brown Birthplace attracts people far and wide to Torrington, CT! This photo taken on August 8th shows members of the Morrison family from Ashton, Maryland and the Griffin family from Bristol, CT visiting this historic site owned by the Torrington Historical Society. The Torrington Trails Network is working on improving walking trails on the property. The site is open everyday from dawn to dusk.
