This holiday season, come visit the Historical Soc

This holiday season, come visit the Historical Society for a tour of the Hotchkiss-Fyler House. This historic house is a treat to see any time of year but is especially memorable during the holiday season. At this time of year, the many Christmas trees, white lights, and antique collections shine against the rich interior details of the first and second floors. Antique toys from the Society’s collection will also be on display, and the dining room table will be set for Christmas dinner with linens, fine china, and crystal from the Hotchkiss collection. The House Museum will be open for tours at 1, 2, and 3 pm on December 21, 27, 28, and 29 and cost $5 for members and children 6 and under and $15 for non-members. You can find tickets at https://torringtonhistoricalsociety.org/events. Walk-ins are welcome, provided that the hourly tour is not sold out.

Tonight at 6:30, the 9-1 Torrington High School football team is playing a home game against the 7-3 Masuk team in the quarterfinals of the CIAC tournament. The team is following in the footsteps of more than a century of THS student athletes. In this photo from our collection, the 1912 football team sits in Torrington’s Fuessenich Park. We wish the team success tonight, and we hope to see Torrington in the finals 🏈

The THS provides a wide variety of programs and services to community members of all ages and backgrounds, ranging from field trips for schoolchildren, to maintaining historic properties for the public to visit, to conserving items from Torrington’s past, all with the mission of preserving, collecting, and sharing Torrington’s rich and diverse history. Without donor support, we would struggle to maintain the level of work we do for the community. We preserve the stories of Torrington’s past as a tribute to our ancestors and as inspiration for present and future generations of Torringtonians. In honor of all Torrington veterans, we are please

In honor of all Torrington veterans, we are pleased to share some recent additions to the Torrington Historical Society collection. Last year, the Society received a collection documenting the service of Korean war veteran and Torrington resident, Charles ‘Chuck’ Perret, a well-known teacher in the area. Mr. Perret enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and went to Korea with the 8th Fighter-Bomber Wing as a F-86 Jet Fighter-Bomber pilot. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1955. Charles Perret was also a member of the Mach Buster’s Club, a designation granted to those who exceeded the speed of sound in an F-86 Sabre jet. The Charles Perret collection includes his flight suit, documents, and numerous photographs from his time in Korea. Interestingly, Charles Perret, who died in 2020, was also the son of another Torrington veteran, Fritz Perret, who served in World War I. Happy Halloween! In the 1950s, Torrington’s Park

Happy Halloween! In the 1950s, Torrington’s Parks and Recreation department, in cooperation with several other organizations, held annual Halloween parties for residents of all ages at Fuessenich Park and other venues in town. These parties were major events, attracting thousands of attendees of all ages, complete with music, games, costume parades, dances, and several other events, including the Mr. Jack-O-Lantern contest. If you’re looking for Halloween plans this weeke

If you’re looking for Halloween plans this weekend, join us for our annual tour of Center Cemetery in downtown Torrington on Friday, October 25th (rain date: October 26th). Visitors will explore the cemetery in lantern light with a guide and will learn about the history of the cemetery, as well as stories from actors portraying its long-deceased residents. Tours will begin at the back of the Torrington Historical Society’s property and end at the main entrance to Center Cemetery, behind City Hall. Attendees are asked to be at the Society at least five minutes prior to their scheduled tour and are encouraged to bring flashlights or lanterns. Six tours will be offered, each limited to 20 people. Tours will begin promptly at the following times: 6:00, 6:20, 6:40, 7:00, 7:20 and 7:40 pm. Admission is $8 for Torrington Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. Proceeds from the tour will benefit educational programming at the Torrington Historical Society. To purchase tickets, visit the homepage of our website (link in bio) our our eventbrite page.
