Burrville, named after the Burr family members who

Burrville, named after the Burr family members who settled in the area in the 19th century, is located in the northeast section of Torrington. Though just a small village, it wasn’t short on amenities: Burrville was once home to saw, shingle and grist mills, a tannery, hammer and shoe shop, Borden’s condensed milk operation, taverns and brickyards, manufacturers of soap, castors, batting, roller skates, piano tops, buckles and furniture! Accessible via the Naugatuck Railroad, the village also had a post office, schoolhouse, a church and village hall and was later a stop for the trolley. The John Brown Birthplace attracts people far and wide to Torrington, CT! This photo taken on August 8th shows members of the Morrison family from Ashton, Maryland and the Griffin family from Bristol, CT visiting this historic site owned by the Torrington Historical Society. The Torrington Trails Network is working on improving walking trails on the property. The site is open everyday from dawn to dusk.

Please join the Torrington Historical Society on August 5th for a jazz performance by the Michael Sarin Quartet, featuring Michael Sarin (drums), Caleb Wheeler Curtis (saxophone), Mick Rossi (piano and percussion), and Fima Ephron (bass). The performance will be held on the grounds of the Torrington Historical Society, 192 Main Street, Torrington, CT. Bring your own lawn chairs, blankets, and refreshments, and enjoy a wonderful evening with us in the gardens! Tickets are $15 for members and $18 for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased in advance on Eventbrite (link copied below and also available on our website), or at the door. Water Street was formerly known as Boarding House

Water Street was formerly known as Boarding House Hill due to the numerous boarding houses lining the road to accommodate the workers of Wolcottville Woolen Mill. Happening TODAY at Howard’s Bookstore! Howard’s Bookstore, located in the former Howard’s Shoestore, is putting together an exhibition about the history of the shoe store. They would like to feature locals’ memories in the exhibition, which will be installed in their new gallery space ‘Catacombs’ in Howard’s old stockrooms. Anyone willing to share their memories can stop by Howard’s on three Open Story Days - June 22, July 21, and August 4 - to record their stories. Or, you can email catacombsgallery@gmail.com. Howard’s and the Torrington Historical Society will be collaborating to preserve the recordings and stories in the Historical Society archives. The Torrington Historical Society’s Jazz in the Garden series returns this summer! Bring your own lawn chairs, blankets, and refreshments, and enjoy a wonderful evening with us in the Hotchkiss-Fyler garden. Tickets are $15 for Torrington Historical Society members, and $18 for non-members. Tickets for each performance can be purchased in advance on Eventbrite - head over to our website for the links! Trail update: on Thursday, members of the Torrington Trails Network finished this 50 foot section of boardwalk that will connect the John Brown Birthplace to the Five Points Center for the Visual Arts!

The Torrington Historical Society and the Torringt

The Torrington Historical Society and the Torrington Trails Network have resumed work to create a new trail connecting the Historical Society’s John Brown Birthplace to the Five Points Center for the Visual Arts. A grant will fund the materials for 3 sections of boardwalk that will be constructed in 2023. This grant is made possible by the City of Torrington with funding from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
